The PIPERS LiDAR swath data set contains LiDAR measurements taken over the Ross Sea in Antarctica. The PIPERS project flew for two consecutive years during November with the IcePod. A total of three flights were flown. Table 1. Campaign, Project Year, and Description ------------------------------------------------ Campaign (Year): Description AN03 (2016): The third IcePod campaign was flown during November and December of 2016. AN04 (2017): The fourth IcePod campaign was flown during November and December of 2017. --------------------------- File Format and Information --------------------------- The data was exported from ArcMap in the GeoTIFF file format (.tif). ---------------------- File Naming Convention ---------------------- Example file name: AN04_F1006_20171121_075953_LIDAR_VQ580_Record1.tif Data was named according the following file naming convention: _F_____.tif Table 2. File Naming Convention ------------------------------- Variable: Description: Theatre AN for Antarctica Campaign IcePod campaign number F F indicates flight Deployment Indicated the deployment number in the campaign year Flight number Flight number for survey YYYYMMDD Year, month, day of survey HHMMSS Hours, minutes, and seconds (At the beginning of file) Sensor type IcePod sensor type Sensor name Name of sensor Record Indicates the record number in each LiDAR flight. (Each LiDAR flight consists of multiple records of data spanning about 10 minutes each.) .tif Indicates TIFF file format --------- File Size --------- GeoTIFF files range from approximately 10 KB to 475 MB. The entire GeoTIFF data set is approximately 39 GB. ---------------- Spatial Coverage ---------------- The approximate spatial coverage of the PIPERS survey is below. AN03 (2016): F1004 AN04 (2017): F1006 and F1008 ------------------------------- Data Acquisition and Processing ------------------------------- The LiDAR swath data set was acquired on a RIEGL VQ-580 Airborne Laser Scanner and processed with the RIEGL RiPROCESS Data Processing Software. All of the processed point cloud data was exported from RiPROCESS in the LAS (v 1.4, without waveform data) file format (.las). The processed point cloud data was imported into ArcMap as a LAS Dataset, converted into an ArcGIS File Geodatabase Raster Dataset, and then converted to a GeoTIFF. -------- Contacts -------- Robin Bell Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University 108E Oceanography 61 Route 9W - PO Box 1000 Palisades, NY 10964-8000 USA Email: robinb@ldeo.columbia.edu -------------------- Document Information -------------------- Document Creation Date: 14 January 2019 Document Revision Date: 09 October 2019
